5 Qualities Christians Can Learn From Sports Fans
I’m a junkie…a football junkie. It’s in my blood. Oh, I’ve tried to kick it but I always come back. I’ve tried substituting other sports—Nascar, basketball, baseball, hockey—and though they can be enjoyable, no other sport gets my blood rushing like the NFL. On a side note, if you are a golf or bowling fan, you may as well quit reading this article right now. For me, trying to watch those games is just one step away from knowing what a lobotomy feels like.
I came across an article some time ago which contains five statements I want to quote. If we will follow Christ with the same enthusiasm we show toward sports we will always be winners! Every true sports fan of any sort will recognize that:
- Sports fans are faithful—they don’t conform.
- Sports fans are tireless—they don’t rest.
- Sports fans are loyal—they don’t switch.
- Sports fans are spenders—they don’t withhold.
- Sports fans are passionate—they don’t give up.

This week and next present the dizzying culmination of the entire football season. The Superbowl and the ProBowl are the venues where we see the very best of the best slug it out on the gridiron. This year I’ve decided to share my enthusiasm by dedicating my next two Sunday morning messages to other pro football enthusiasts in a two part mini-series entitled, “Game Day”. After all, life is a contact sport!
The Bible has several allusions to sporting events of the day. I invite you to check out the following messages in the next couple of weeks:
Jan. 30 – Facing the Giants (Learn how to live your life fearlessly.)
Feb. 6 – God’s Game Plan (Learn how to always succeed at facing life’s challenges.)
